Dear Beyond Barriers Supporters,
Beyond Barriers co-hosted Herricks High School’s First “You Are Awesome” Day
— Honoring Samuel, Spreading Love and Hope
On May 2, 2025, Herricks High School held its inaugural “You Are Awesome” Day to honor the life of Samuel Chen, a young man remembered for his kindness, encouragement, and unwavering positivity. Beyond Barriers, as one of the school’s valued community partners, was proud to take part in this heartfelt tribute, joining students, staff, and the community to carry forward Samuel’s legacy.
The central courtyard was filled with warmth and love. Under the blue sky, Samuel’s favorite songs played, classmates danced to his favorite moves, and voices echoed his signature phrase: “You Are Awesome.” Colorful chalk art on the ground displayed “Happy Day,” Samuel’s name, and smiling faces, making it feel as though he was still there, smiling alongside everyone.
Beyond Barriers hosted a booth at the event alongside the Samuel Chen Live On Foundation, sharing their mission and programs, and engaging students and guests in conversations about supporting individuals with special needs and their families. Thoughtfully prepared memorial and charity items were displayed, drawing visitors to stop, learn, and connect.
The school’s art teacher led more than 200 students in creating two large wooden art pieces featuring Samuel’s image, surrounded by heartfelt messages. The school hallways also displayed treasured photographs from his memorial service, bringing back vivid memories of Samuel’s encouraging presence.
Although the weather forecast had predicted rain, the skies cleared and sunshine filled the courtyard—just as bright as the light Samuel brought into people’s lives.
Herricks High School announced that “You Are Awesome” will be an annual tradition. Beyond Barriers remains committed to working with the community to keep spreading this love and encouragement, inspiring more people to be cared for, supported, and uplifted.
With gratitude and commitment,
Beyond Barriers Foundation
